Tampons & Pads vs. Our Menstrual Cups
An Active Life
Young women in developing nations lose 20% of their education because they cannot afford menstrual hygiene products.* Even those who can afford the latest tampon or pads often skip activities for fear of accidents. Over the past decade menstrual cups have gained more and more popularity, especially among active women as it is a perfect solution for women engaged in swimming, jogging, yoga and other sports.
The WonderCup is made of medical-grade silicon and does not absorb the blood but collects it—less risk of infection. The WonderCup holds about 3 times as much fluid a pad and can be emptied often or be left in up to 12 hours. The WonderCup is easy to sterilize one cup can be used for up to 10 years.
When you are using a cup there is no smell. Menstrual fluid only smells when it comes in contact with air. That is why pads smell.
Dollars & Cents
A women living in a developed nation will spend on average US$5,000 on tampons and pads throughout her lifetime. The leading menstrual cup retails at US$30 when these companies sell to organizations in the developing world they charge between US$10-20. While we aim to donate WonderCups to our partners to increase awareness, interest, and demand, the WonderCup will retail in low income areas for ~US$4.
The average woman uses between 12,000 – 14,000 tampons & pads during her lifetime. Products destined for landfills or the sea where they can take 300 years to biodegrade. If you were to put all of the waste in one place it would fill up half a dump truck. Approximately 20 billion pads, tampons and applicators are sent to North American landfills each year—their carbon emissions contribute to global warming.
WonderCup is an environmentally friendly affordable alternative to tampons and pads. The menstrual cup is made of soft 100% medical grade silicone. WonderCup is easily cleaned with soapy water and before each use your WonderCup should be sterilized by placing it in boiling water for 5 minutes. Your WonderCup can last for up to ten years.
